My two children, Cade and Liberty, are just 14 and a half months apart. For much of their childhood, they were often mistaken for twins. From early on, their mother and I made a point to spend one-on-one time with each of them. always tried to ensure that we both have on-on-one time with each child. Cade came up with the name for our time together: “Double C Time,” since we share the same first initial.
One of my favorite Double C moments happened the day after we returned from our trip to the Northeast Kingdom. Ever since we saw A Walk in the Woods, Lord Huron had earned a permanent place on our travel playlists, especially any time we were heading north.
That year, for Cade’s 13th birthday, I promised I would take him to see Lord Huron when they came to Maryland on tour. It would be his first concert. As it turned out, the show at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD was scheduled for the day after our long drive back from Vermont.
On the way there, I tried to set the scene for him: the opening act he might not know, the crowds, the energy, the volume, and the traffic. I also made sure he knew we could leave anytime he wanted.
I could tell he was a little nervous, but excited too. We got there early and found our seats. The opening act was First Aid Kit, a Swedish sister group touring with Lord Huron. Then the headline took the state, with frontman Ben Schneider fully owning the moment and the crowd.
It was a phenomenal concert – easily one of my personal top five.
More than that, it was a perfect night. I got to be there for Cade’s first live concert. We were listening to a band we both loved. And we were doing it together. It checked all the boxes, and I will always treasure it.
